Abstract

Photosynthesis is a crucial process that impacts ecosystem productivity and functioning. It is influenced by current and projected future global changes, and understanding how photosynthesis responds to these changes is important for predicting the services provided by terrestrial ecosystems. While short-term responses of photosynthesis to environmental change are well understood, the longer-term process of acclimation is less known. There are uncertainties regarding the timescale and component of environmental variability to which photosynthetic traits acclimate, as well as the interplay between resource supply and demand in influencing photosynthetic acclimation. Further research and collaboration are needed to address these gaps in knowledge. [Extracted from the article]
