Abstract

The novel "Resurrection" by Leo Tolstoy, written in 1899, addresses the themes of resurrection and commitment to pacifism, vegetarianism, and the rejection of bourgeois institutions. Tolstoy, internationally recognized for his pacifism and his relationship with Mahatma Gandhi, experienced a crisis of meaning in his life and distanced himself from existing institutions and social customs, returning to a Christianity based on the teachings of Jesus. The novel follows Prince Nejliudov, who feels guilty for abandoning a prostitute accused of murder, and criticizes institutions and external forms, highlighting the importance of self-criticism and personal progress. Tolstoy seeks to awaken and reflect in the reader, and his goal is to provoke moments of "aha" and offer a spark of hope for resurrection in times of suffering caused by alienation.
