Abstract

This article discusses the ethical considerations surrounding informed consent in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP). PAP involves the use of psychedelic substances in conjunction with psychotherapy to treat conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. The article highlights the importance of supporting participants during challenging psychedelic experiences and the need for clear guidelines on the use of rescue medications. It also explores issues related to capacity and consent during the psychedelic experience and suggests strategies for strengthening the informed consent process, such as the use of psychiatric advance directives and dynamic consent. The article emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness and cultural responsiveness in the therapeutic relationship and calls for further research on consent models and the termination of psychedelic sessions.
