Abstract

This article analyzes the female narration of La amante de Gardel (2015) by Puerto Rican author Mayra Santos-Febres in light of Mladen Dolar's theorization of the object voice and the definitions of the subject proposed by Patricia Collins and bell hooks. The essay situates the novel in relation to Santos-Febres' earlier works in order to show how La amante de Gardel shares some of the same concerns while distinguishing itself through its first-person narration by an Afrodescendant protagonist, Micaela Thorné. The article shows how the ambiguous qualities of Carlos Gardel's object voice inspire the protagonist's narration. By narrating her story, Micaela appropriates Gardel's voice and affirms herself as a subject at the same time that she recognizes and questions the sexist and racist discourses that attempt to limit her, in particular the mind/body dichotomy.
