The history of thinking became the subject of historical research after the History of Ideas was separated from the History of Philosophy. This new historical course has come a long way since it took its present form. The History of Ideas became institutionalized in the United States in the late 1930s and was gradually replaced by Intellectual History in the 1970s. In Europe, German historians were the first to take an interest in the history of thinking, dealing with it in the course of Geistesgeschichte, Ideengeschichte, and later Begriffsgeschichte. How these historical movements developed, what methods they used and what problems they solved will be explored in this study, together with a comparison with each other. Finally, we will conclude with a focus on the status and the research of intellectual history today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
