Abstract

The author's conceptual model for 'vocal alignment' gives equal importance to both semantic interpretations of the word 'voice.' It seeks an alignment between the vocal sounds one's body produces and one's artistic, personal, social, and political voice. Parameters that lead to vocal alignment overlap the sonic or musical level, various creative choices as well as contextual, professional, financial, promotional, social, and political components related to art-making. Aligning lived experiences and creative output is challenging—the author's path toward vocal alignment implies an inclination toward vocal, technical, and artistic flexibility, guided by social justice models, queer theory, and decolonial efforts.
