Abstract

This article presents information on a new breed of security software, the Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS). The value of the technology is that it goes beyond the observe-and-guess nature of most network-based intrusion prevention products. To be successful, HIPS products typically require an in-depth understanding of how servers work, and more specifically what sort of operations occur when a wicked person attempts to gain control. HIPS is a great example of a technology that works because it runs on the server and can intimately understand the server and applications' behavior.
