Abstract

Vortex is a viable contender for nonvolatile magnetic random access memory systems owing to its unique binary state and great thermal stability. Controlling vortex polarity and chirality is crucial for vortex devices. This paper investigates the switching of the magnetic vortex core in square Permalloy thin films via micromagnetic simulations using in-plane alternating magnetic fields. The creation of an antivortex and the annihilation of the original vortex cause the magnetic vortex core to switch. The amplitude and frequency of the alternating magnetic field influence the switching of vortex core polarity. The switching may be completed in less than 8 ns with an intermediate magnetic field intensity at the gyrotropic frequency, demonstrating that the applied field can cause the vortex state to switch efficiently. This study gives a practical approach to the rapid switching of the magnetic vortex core, which might be useful for storage applications in vortex-based spintronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
