Abstract
- This article discusses the use of percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) for decompressive purposes in biliary obstruction in Somalia. The Mogadishu Somali Turkey Training and Research Hospital is the only interventional radiology facility center in Somalia, and prior to its opening in 2014, biliary procedures were done surgically or patients had to go abroad for treatment. The article presents the results of 25 PTBD procedures performed at the hospital, with minor complications occurring in 5 cases. The study concludes that interventional radiology significantly improves the quality of life for individuals with obstructive jaundice in low-resource countries like Somalia.
