Abstract

Recreational fear, such as watching horror movies or visiting haunted houses, may have mental health benefits, according to emerging research. The experience of fear mixed with enjoyment can help individuals practice dealing with scary situations and unpleasant emotions in a safe environment. Some theories suggest that recreational fear is rooted in our biology and can be likened to a type of play, allowing individuals to simulate threats and negative emotions without being in danger. Studies have also found that horror fans may be more psychologically resilient and better equipped to handle real threats. However, it is important to respect individual preferences and not force oneself to engage in activities that are not enjoyable. [Extracted from the article]
