Abstract

This document is a reply to a letter regarding a review on chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) in adult patients. The authors express gratitude for the message that more effective treatments require a better understanding of the underlying causes of the disease. They discuss some clinical presentations of mitochondrial disease and the association of CIPO with familial degenerative intestinal neuropathy. However, they disagree with the list of genes and diseases that should be added to the causes of CIPO, stating that further investigation is needed to establish their relevance. They also mention that certain conditions and diseases associated with CIPO require clarification regarding their causal relationship. The authors hope that increased availability of genetic evaluations and histologic examinations will help in selecting more effective treatments and clarifying the role of causal factors in the pathophysiology of CIPO.
