Abstract

In this study, we evaluated the accuracy of image measurment using a growth diagnosis support tool developed collectively with private enterprises, NARO, and Aichi Agricultural Research Center. The stem diameter, stem length from the shoot apex to the base of the highest flowering cluster (flowering position), and leaf width were measured in tomato plants using images acquired with a smartphone camera and compared with actual values; the accuracy of image measurement was evaluated using the growth diagnosis support tool. The imagemeasuring method involves capturing the measured parts and a marker for measurement on the same screen and performing image analysis on a smartphone. The error rate were 2.2% and 3.7% for stem diameter and flowering position, respectively. However, the error rate for leaf width varied between 3.7% and 6.6% depending on the variety, owing to variations in leafing conditions, such as the degree of leaf-tip curl. Moreover, the axial symmetry of leaf width was confirmed in tomato plants, indicating that measuring one side enables the estimation of leaf width, and simplifies the measurement procedure.
