Abstract
- This article presents a collection of memoirs from the first researchers of German Sign Language (DGS) at the University of Hamburg. The researchers, led by Siegmund Prillwitz, conducted research on communication among deaf children and worked towards integrating sign language into education. The article emphasizes the progress made in recognizing and studying sign language in Germany, as well as the contributions of the deaf community. The researchers stress the importance of collaboration between hearing and deaf individuals in their work. The text also discusses the challenges faced in promoting DGS within the deaf community and society, and mentions the establishment of research centers and institutes dedicated to the study of DGS.
