Abstract
- This article explores the actions of Canadian R&B artist Jully Black, who modified the lyrics of the Canadian national anthem to address issues of racism and colonialism. Despite facing racist backlash, Black was later honored by the Assembly of First Nations for her bravery. The article also discusses a book titled "No Better Home? Jews, Canada, and the Sense of Belonging," which examines the experiences of Jewish people in Canada and their impact on Canadian society. The author, an Indigenous studies scholar, finds the book insightful and relevant, as it reflects on Jewish identity in a diverse and complex manner. The article concludes by examining the complex relationship between Jewish and Indigenous communities in Canada, emphasizing the need for a nuanced understanding of settler history and a commitment to recognizing Indigenous sovereignty. The author calls for reconciliation and the building of kinship between settler communities and Indigenous nations. [Extracted from the article]
