Abstract
- The BirdReturns program, established in 2014, aims to create temporary wetlands for shorebirds in California's Central Valley, where their habitat has been greatly reduced due to human development. Through reverse auctions, farmers offer their land and a dollar amount, and the highest-value habitats win. Successful bidders receive cash in exchange for flooding their land, providing short-term habitat for birds. The program has paid over $2 million to more than 100 farmers, flooding 60,000 acres to date. With a recent influx of funding, BirdReturns is working to address the habitat deficit for shorebirds during late summer when water is in high demand. [Extracted from the article]
