Abstract

The article reports on the investigation into alleged tax fraud by engine equipment manufacturer Caterpillar, which avoided income taxes by shifting profits to a Swiss subsidiary, that was defused after the company's lawyers questioned the legal basis for the investigation. It informs about the accusation by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service that Caterpillar used a tax shelter to understate its profits. It also raises the speculation that Caterpillar was given special political treatment.
