Abstract
- A 66-year-old woman developed fulminant cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP) while being treated with fluoxetine for a mood disorder. She had a history of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and had previously undergone mechanical ventilation. She was admitted to the hospital with fever, cough, and shortness of breath. After receiving treatment for suspected bacterial pneumonia and inflammatory pneumonitis, she was extubated and discharged. However, she was readmitted three weeks later with severe hypoxia and required mechanical ventilation again. Further tests revealed organizing pneumonia, which was attributed to the fluoxetine therapy. The woman also experienced iatrogenic pneumothorax, encephalopathy, and ischaemic colitis.
