Abstract
- The article "Yahwistic Identity in the Achaemenid period" by Gad Barnea examines the dual identity of the Elephantine Yahwists during the Achaemenid period. The members of the community identified themselves as both Yhwdy (Jews) and 'rmy (Arameans). The article shows that the Elephantine Yahwists had a complex identity that cannot simply be reduced to a single category. It is argued that ethnic identity markers, when used in a military context, can be assimilated by members of other ethnicities serving under the same banner, creating the phenomenon of "multiple identities". The Elephantine Yhwdy' were already part of a unified Yahwistic ethnic identity when they landed on the island. [Extracted from the article]
