Abstract

The purpose of these brief lines is to reintroduce an answer, which ancient people from East and West have left in their millenary wisdoms, and which we often forget because we understand them, to an equally ancestral problem: what should those of us who have embraced Philosophy, more than as a trade or profession, as one of the most genuine ways of living for our species, do when the bustle of technological novelty seems to threaten our inner self, our privacy, and the shelter of the necessary daily family life and affection; the reflective, idle silence that shelters us from productive immediacy and the judgments of those around us. The journey that leads us to the answer of Philosophy reminds us of the contemplative ascetic traditions and allegories such as that of the Platonic cave, where we run the risk of being dazzled by the brightness of the almost permanent lights that technology, with its benefits, has brought us in this IV Industrial Revolution, where the answer in question continues to be the necessary division between public and private, action, production for consumption, versus the warmth, protection and silences of healthy privacy, a genuine space, moreover, to process the speed of information flow with which we are challenged from all possible sides.
