Abstract

Researchers at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles have successfully restored vision in mice with damaged optic nerves by generating new nerve cells in the eye. This breakthrough offers hope for treating conditions like glaucoma, which cause blindness by damaging the optic nerve. The team used a cocktail of chemicals to coax existing cells within the eye to transform into retinal ganglion cells, which are responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. While further studies are needed before human trials can be considered, this approach shows promise for restoring lost vision in the future. [Extracted from the article]
