Abstract

A cargo ship called the Sounion Trader recently tested an onboard carbon-capture system in the Persian Gulf to reduce its climate footprint. Shipping is responsible for about 3% of global CO₂ emissions, and while some operators are using cleaner fuels and other methods to reduce emissions, capturing and storing emissions onboard is another possibility. However, there are challenges, such as finding space for the equipment and the captured carbon, as well as supplying the energy needed to recharge the chemical sorbents. Despite these obstacles, companies like Seabound and Value Maritime are working on retrofitting ships for carbon capture. [Extracted from the article]
