Abstract

Acne is a chronic, inflammatory, immune-mediated disease of the pilosebaceous unit. It generally appears during puberty, coinciding with the beginning of hormone production. Adequate, early, effective and safe treatment is the key to disease remission without physical and/or emotional sequelae. Isotretinoin is a drug commonly used to control and treat acne, however, many adverse effects are observed during its use. The objective of the present study was to review the scientific literature in order to elucidate the risks of using isotretinoin in acne therapy. To this end, a bibliographical search was conducted in the MEDLINE, LILACS and EMBASE databases. After selecting studies published between 2017 and 2023, five articles were included in the present review. The results of the studies analyzed indicate high efficacy in the regression of acne in individuals who used isotretinoin, however, effects such as teratogenicity, infertility, psychiatric disorders and reduced body lubrication are observed. The use of isotretinoin is a viable therapeutic choice for the treatment of acne, but it needs to be used with caution due to the side effects resulting from its use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
