Abstract

The article reports on the unexpected weak economic performance posted by Japan in the fourth quarter of 2023 that resulted in a recession and a drop to its economic standing as fourth biggest economy in the world. Also cited are the positive developments like record corporate profits, bullish stock market, and low unemployment rate, and the lagging consumer spending and business investment.
