Abstract

This article is a response to a previous paper that discussed the intensive care requirements of patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). The authors of this response emphasize the importance of detailing the diverse reasons for ICU admission in ICI-treated patients and argue that ICU admission can be beneficial regardless of whether patients present with ICI-related adverse events. They also acknowledge the challenges faced by emergency care systems, such as shortage of ICU beds and the heterogeneity of emergency cancer services. The authors conclude that early recognition and aggressive treatment of high-risk immune-related adverse events are crucial for good outcomes, while also recognizing the need to identify patients who are unlikely to benefit from intensive care interventions.
