Abstract

Purpose: To analyze the probability of dietary changes and exercise associated to the different stages of a type 2 diabetes diagnostic evolution and social conditions in the Mexican adult population. Methodological design: An analysis was carried out based on data obtained from the National Health and Aging Study in Mexico (2012, 2015 and 2018). Variables were selected considering health status and reported social conditions. Results: In 1,879 people, 38.2 % reached prediabetes levels, 40.5 % type 2 diabetes, and 21.3 % normal glucose levels. Dietary modifications and exercise were significantly associated with having already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or with some comorbidity, higher education, younger age, having health services, a higher index of assets, staying in contact with family and friends, and making personal medical decisions together with family members and health care professionals. Research limitations: The results card that was given to participants of the National Health and Aging Study in Mexico does not indicate prediabetic condition. Findings: Knowledge of health status sparks interest in both dietary care and exercise. The manner in which this practice is influenced by social conditions and accompaniment through support networks in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes is observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
