Abstract

"The Rural State: Making Comunidades, Campesinos, and Conflict in Peru's Central Sierra" by Javier Puente is a book that examines the history of the Comunidad Campesina de San Juan de Ondores in the central Peruvian Andes. Puente argues that the internal armed conflict in Peru from 1980 to 2000 was primarily an agrarian conflict, contrary to assumptions of state abandonment in rural areas. The book explores the processes of change in the central sierra, the history of San Juan de Ondores, and the remaking of social relations of production in the countryside. Puente's work sheds light on the tensions between state agents and local communities and the historical roots of land struggles in Peru. [Extracted from the article]
