Abstract
- This article examines the history of Shintō in colonial Korea from 1910 to 1945. It challenges the notion that Shintō is Japan's indigenous religion and explores its development in relation to Japan's cultural and diplomatic exchange with the West. The article discusses the efforts of the Government-General of Korea to assimilate Koreans and promote Shintō, including the construction of shrines. However, many Koreans did not embrace Shintō, leading to conflicts between the Japanese and Koreans. The article also explores the diverse perspectives among Korean scholars regarding Shintō and its influence on Korean society. Overall, the spread of Shintō in colonial Korea was a complex and contested process. [Extracted from the article]
