Abstract
- A study presented at the AAOS Annual Meeting examined weight changes in patients after surgery for ankle fractures. The study found that patients recovering from ankle open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) gained an average of about 10 pounds and 1.5 BMI points after 6 months, and about 20 pounds and 3 BMI points after 1 year. The study included 56 patients who underwent ORIF surgeries at two hospitals. The authors noted that weight gain after ankle fractures is significant and affects patients of all preoperative BMI groups, and further research is needed to address this issue.
