Abstract

The exploration of spices based on topographic conditions is an interesting study to do because it has a significant influence on the characteristics of the active compounds of these spices. Indonesia is a country known for its diverse topographic conditions, from low and highlands to hilly lands, and mountains. Therefore, this study aims to explore the effect of growing place height on the characteristics of the active compound of crude citronella oil from several places grown in Bogor, Indonesia. Analysis of the active compound composition of crude citronella oil using the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) method and the antioxidant activity analysis using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The results show that the content of the main active compound of crude citronella oil of the same variety varies was different based on the planting area. In addition, planting at high altitudes can produce higher citronellal content (Cisarua, Purasari Village, Leuwiliang District). The results of the antioxidant activity analysis showed that all crude citronella oil of the same variety varies and different planting areas had strong antioxidant activity, with LC50 values ranged from 74.69 to 86.89 ppm. Citronellal, Geraniol, and Citronellol were the three highest active compounds found in crude citronella oil from citronella leaves of Cymbopogon nardus L. variety Sitrona 2 Agribun observed.
