Abstract

The article focuses on the writer and artist Henri Michaux. Michaux has been exhibiting his paintings throughout Europe and the U.S. for almost as long as he has been writing. He has written several poetic texts about painters and painting, including a reading of artist Zao-Wou-Ki's lithographs, a preface to a book by writer W. Grohmann on painter Paul Klee, meditations on artist Rene Magritte's paintings, meditations on art work of mental patients and others and a few other texts about painting, many of which appear in Passages. Michaux's book, Saisir, contains many drawings, which hint at new preoccupations in his development as an artist, although traces of his old style are still very evident. In all of his poetry and his painting, Michaux explores the movements of the world within, seeking a heightened awareness of the continually evolving self while experimenting with the possibilities of artistic expression. Michaux considers writing and painting to be the signs of movement as well as the tools which aid him in self-exploration.
