Abstract

The article analyzes the role of scientific journals in the communication and dissemination of knowledge in Mexico. It mentions that scientific journals have been affected by bibliometric indicators that evaluate academic production, such as presence in international databases. The importance of regional databases, such as Latindex, Scielo, and Redalyc, for the internationalization of journals is also highlighted. Both traditional metrics and alternative metrics of four educational research journals in Mexico are examined: Revista Electrónica de Investigación Educativa (redie), Revista Iberoamericana de Educación Superior (ries), Revista Mexicana de Investigación Educativa (rmie), and Perfiles Educativos. Different bibliometric indicators, such as CiteScore and SJR, are discussed to evaluate the performance of these journals. The location of these journals in the Scopus bibliographic index is also analyzed, and the challenges they face to improve their citation indexes and respond to the demand for publication are identified. The importance of using traditional metrics to evaluate the performance of journals is emphasized, but without privileging the location in impact indexes over the main function of communicating knowledge. Additionally, it is suggested to give greater visibility and use to alternative metrics and strengthen editorial teams to carry out dissemination tasks. [Extracted from the article]
