Abstract
- This article examines Ockham's critique of both the plenitude of papal power and the plenitude of royal power, arguing from the retranslation of theoretical nominalism into political terms. The primacy of the singular represents the irreducible importance of individuals and signals the birth of subjective rights. Here we examine Ockham's theological-political position based on two texts that critics have conceived as intimately linked both in time and in the sentiment that inspired them: Octo quaestiones de potestate papae and Breviloquium. Pointing out the analogies between nominalist and political philosophy, he will argue in favor of what religious life expresses in an exemplary way, at least from the Franciscan perspective: lex evangelica est lex libertatis.
