Abstract

The article presents the CosmicWatch Muon Detector project, a portable low-cost device designed to detect muons on the Earth's surface. It uses scintillating materials and a photomultiplier to record particle events. Two detectors are used in coincidence mode to filter events and restrict them to muons. A Perl script was developed to read data through a USB port connected to a coincidence detector. The data is inputted into a PostgreSQL database and visualized using LibreOffice and Grafana. Experiments were conducted to measure the muon flux and the temporal distribution of successive events. The CosmicWatch Detector project allows for experiments that corroborate physical theories and highlights the importance of disseminating experimental particle physics in the classroom.
