Abstract

This article, titled "Clinical image: 'Gouty tophus mimicking digital necrosis in a young man'," discusses the case of a 23-year-old man who presented with acute swelling in a finger on his right hand. The physical examination revealed an enlarging purpuric finger with ulcerative necrosis and whitish pus. After ruling out infection and vascularities, gouty tophus was considered as the diagnosis. Laboratory tests showed an increased serum uric acid level and hand X-ray revealed bone erosion surrounded by radiolucent soft-tissue nodules. The article also discusses the rarity of cutaneous necrosis in gouty tophi and the improvement of the skin lesion with allopurinol treatment. [Extracted from the article]
