Abstract

Despite the very controversial results in various clinical studies, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a frequently used therapy method in interdisciplinary multimodal pain therapy (IMST). A great advantage of this procedure for the patient is the possibility to determine the frequency of the applications and the intensity of the therapy themselves and thus to be able to actively participate in the therapy. There are also only a few contraindications and hardly any side effects when using TENS. By stimulating the Aβ fibers in the periphery, segmental pain inhibition is set in motion and pain transmission is inhibited. However, the results of the clinical studies published in recent years regarding the effect of TENS in the pain therapy set- ting are extremely controversial. Our clinical study on the subject also shows clear differences in the treatment results. In summary, however, it can be seen that even if the pain-relieving effect of TENS therapy cannot be observed in all patients, a large proportion still benefit from the use of TENS.
