Abstract

Even the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is getting in on the harm reduction act. In fact, for heavy drinkers, or any drinkers, reducing the amount consumed is a benefit. Requiring abstinence can scare people away from treatment altogether, and those are generally the people who need it most. Now, the NIAAA, which has talked to ADAW in the past about the pros and cons of attempts to reduce drinking (see https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adaw.33179), has come out with advice for the public on the benefits of reducing heavy alcohol consumption.
