Abstract
- The government's rollout of electric vehicle (EV) chargers has been slow due to political factors. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently announced $623 million in new awards for charging stations, but despite $2 billion in subsidies, only two federally funded stations have opened. The FHWA's rule requiring workers to be certified by the electricians union has been criticized for limiting the available workforce. Additionally, states have criticized the lack of flexibility and restrictions in the program. The latest funding includes allocations for disadvantaged communities and areas with high usage, but the political obstacles to building charging stations may hinder the adoption of EVs.
