Abstract

The aerosol deposition process, involving the impact of solid particles on a substrate at high velocities, is an attractive method for the manufacture of ceramic coatings at room temperature. For process optimisation, it is crucial to select a powder having the appropriate physical characteristics and evaluate the particle flow behaviour during the deposition process. In this study, a powder modification process using high-energy milling and spray drying to improve the applicability of precursor powders was developed and evaluated both numerically and experimentally. A modified aerosol deposition system incorporating a brush-type aerosol generator was employed to maintain the continuity of the aerosol supply and improve the stability of the particle concentration. The deposition efficiency was nearly tripled when using spray-dried granules (0.68%) instead of the as-received powders (0.26%). From tribological measurements, the strongest interfacial bonding was also confirmed for coatings prepared with alumina granules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
