Abstract

In the article "Rethinking economic sovereignty," Leon Wansleben discusses Keith Hart's essay on the rise and fall of national capitalism. Hart argues that the strong connection between mass industrial capitalism and state power that emerged during the Second Industrial Revolution is now dissolving, leading to the demise of national capitalisms. Wansleben raises questions about the relationship between national capitalisms and the global order, highlighting how American imperialism has both supported and hindered the development of national capitalisms in different regions. Wansleben also explores the relationships between corporate, market, and state power in an increasingly fractured, imperialist world. The article concludes by acknowledging the challenges of finding a formula that balances the demands for democracy and welfare with the forces of capitalism. [Extracted from the article]
