Abstract

The text proposes the analysis of three recurrent situations in the colonial documentation of Charcas (XVI-XVIII centuries) in which slavery, the prejudices of the colonial estamentary society and emotions intersect. It shows that, although the institution of slavery and its practice violently crossed and conditioned the affective life of the vassals, it did not prevent the development of strong bonds between those of different condition and quality; in particular between Afro-descendants and indigenous people whose prolonged contact the Monarchy sought, uselessly, to prevent. Also, that blood ties within the same family were no guarantee of affection or respect for the physical or symbolic integrity of the enslaved relatives who, nevertheless, showed effective skill in defending their rights before the courts.
