Abstract

The gold mining village of Santo Antônio da Jacobina, located in the hinterlands of the Captaincy of Bahia, was built in 1722 due to the discovery of alluvial gold in the Itapicuru River basin. Mining brought about a significant change in the region's economy by attracting individuals from various social backgrounds and ethnic origins to the mines. Mining activities using pans in the village's streams caused a noticeable environmental transformation, as it altered the landscape that was predominantly composed of agricultural properties. The aim of this article is to analyze the asymmetrical dependencies and social hierarchies in the village of Jacobina based on the registry list of free and enslaved workers during the mining dates recorded between 1720 and 1723. The social conditions and qualities attributed to these individuals will serve as a starting point for understanding the processes of social hierarchy formation that took place in that society.
