Famous personalities and celebrities, when they died, were the subject of great television coverage, which is broadcast on news programs and television news, such as Jornal Nacional. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the transformations of Jornal Nacional from the death of illustrious characters. The focus is on the death of Freddie Mercury, Queen rock band vocalist, occurred in 1991; Brazilian Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, who died in 1994; the pop star Michael Jackson, who died in 2009; and the Brazilian singer Marília Mendonça, in 2021. The theoretical basis to clarify the discussions will be the television genre as a cultural category (MITTELL, 2001). The investigation has an exploratory and observational approach (GIL, 2008).
