Adverse drug reactions are still a growing practical problem in pharmacotherapy. Adverse drug reactions may occur during treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) or result in admission to the ICU, and in the latter case, pharmacotherapy should always be modified if it is a source of complications. From a practical point of view, observations from Polish ICUs indicate that the use of fluoroquinolone chemotherapeutics is not always rational. Fluoroquinolones are broad-spectrum antibacterials, also with good oral bioavailability and optimal distribution parameters. Their indications in the ICU include the treatment of urinary tract infections, pneumonia, gastrointestinal infections, and infections of the skin, subcutaneous tissue and joints. Fluoroquinolones may cause side effects with a different clinical picture, which in most cases are predictable and active prevention.
