Abstract

Elizabeth Mrema is a lawyer and activist from Tanzania who has dedicated her career to environmental conservation. Growing up in the Kilimanjaro region, she witnessed the loss of biodiversity and the negative impacts on communities and ecosystems. Mrema has worked with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in various roles, including executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity. She played a key role in negotiating and adopting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to protect 30 percent of the world's land and waters by 2030. Mrema's leadership and advocacy have been recognized with prestigious awards, and she continues to work towards the implementation of environmental regulations and goals.
