Abstract

Iana Aranda, the senior director of Engineering for Sustainable Development at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), is leading efforts to promote sustainability in engineering. She manages programs and platforms that align with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and encourages engineers to participate and contribute to sustainable development. The demand for sustainability in engineering roles is increasing due to factors such as environmental, social, and governance considerations, as well as investments in climate action. Aranda's work includes collaborating with global partners, addressing manufacturing challenges in low-resource settings, and supporting initiatives like Engineering for Change (E4C) and the Amazon CoLab. She attributes her success to her mentors and the staff she has worked with, and she emphasizes the importance of being comfortable with discomfort when navigating uncharted territory.
