Abstract

Alfred J. Rieber's book, "Storms over the Balkans during the Second World War," provides a new perspective on the complex developments in the Balkans in the 1940s. Rieber emphasizes four factors: geography, the tradition of irregular warfare, ethnic and religious tensions, and great-power rivalries. The book is divided into two parts, with the first focusing on the motivations and decisions of leaders such as Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, and Tito. The second part explores the relationship between Yugoslav Communists and the USSR. Rieber argues that these factors continue to influence the region today, leading to unresolved ethnic conflict and political authoritarianism. However, the book's focus on individual leaders may overshadow the broader historical analysis. [Extracted from the article]
