Importance of high strength steels and their welding in petrochemical industries.

With the rising needs and availability of petroleum and relative energy resources, their production, refining and conveyance have grew paramount importance in petrochemical industries. Thus, suitability of various high strength steels for various applications are required to be addressed. As strengthening mechanism is important for high strength steels effect of various factors such as cooling rate and effect of alloying elements on strengthening mechanisms have been emphasized. With a view to identify a suitable materials for petrochemical industrial applications properties, applications and weldability issues of several commercial grades are discussed in detail in this paper. Purpose of this reviews is to enlighten importance of high strength steels and to shed light on preferable grades of theses steels. After going through various literatures it is believed that in terms of mechanical integrity S690QL is suitable for structural and piping applications in petrochemical industries and there is a scope of further research emphasizing weldability issues for this grade of high strength steel.
