Abstract

Dogs are polytocous, with an average litter size of three to seven puppies. A singleton litter is typically regarded as a high-risk pregnancy and is to be watched carefully. A 6-year-old, non-descripted bitch in her second pregnancy was brought with a 66 days mating history. The single pup in the bitch led to the diagnosis of the cause of uterine inertia based on clinical, ultrasonographical, and radiographic evidence. A tentative diagnosis of primary uterine inertia was made and, an emergency caesarean section was performed under general anesthesia with adequate resuscitation methods in order to save the life of the bitch. The dead emphysematous fetus was moved to the incision site by gently pushing and squeezing the uterine horn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
