Abstract

While it is widely acknowledged that the art of Islamic calligraphy in Anatolia flourished during the Ottoman era, the aesthetic of Seljuk thuluth writing is undeniably compelling. The calligraphies that belong to the Anatolian Seljuk period were mostly preferred for the decoration of the architectural works. One of the most frequently utilized locations for these writings is in the inscriptions found on the crown door, altar, and pulpit. Inscriptions, which act as identifiers for the building, are crucial for the information they convey, alongside their aesthetic value in the art of writing. In this article, the inscriptions found in the buildings of the Kutahya period of the Anatolian Seljuk Empire have been studied. Inscriptions can be found on different types of buildings, including mosques, bridges, and baths, in the centre of Kutahya and its surrounding districts. In the first place, the inscriptions have been transcribed. The inscriptions’ characters have undergone analysis based on letter anatomy and stacking style, and their position in the history of the art of writing has been explored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
