Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the species identification and prevalence of Eimeriosis in lambs in Balikesir province. A total of 600 fecal samples were collected from 4 different farms in central Balikesir, Edremit, Bigadic, and Bandirma. Animals included in the study were in the age range of 30-60, 60-90, 90-120 days. A total of 50 animals as 25 males and 25 females were selected for each age range. Eimeriosis was detected in 438 (73%) of six hundred animals analyzed by Mc Master method. 110 (73.33%) of 150 animals in Balıkesir center, 108 (72%) of 150 animals in Edremit, 96 (64%) of 150 animals in Bigadiç and 124 (82.66%) of 150 animals in Bandırma were found Eimeria positive. Seven different Eimeria species were detected and all observed on all four farms. Mixed infections with a minimum of three and a maximum of six Eimeria species were detected in Eimeria-positive animals. Pathogenic species Eimeria ahsata, Eimeria ovinoidalis and Eimeria bakuensis were detected in infected lambs. In terms of general infection rates, Eimeria ahsata in 367 (83.78%), Eimeria parva in 331 (75.57%), Eimeria ovinoidalis in 310 (70.77%), Eimeria bakuensis in 306 (69.86%), Eimeria faueri in 278 (63.47%), Eimeria intricata in 260 (59.36%), and Eimeria pallida in 250 (57.07%) of 438 were found positive. In this study, the prevalence of Eimeria species and the species responsible for the infection in lambs reared in Balıkesir province were determined for the first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
